Things You Should Know About Mosquitos

Maine has identified approximately 43 species of mosquitos within the state.

Certain species of mosquitoes have been identified as potential carriers of West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

    Only the female mosquito bites.

The majority of a mosquito's life cycle is spent in an aquatic environment.

Female mosquitos lay their eggs on or adjacent to the water's edge, on vegetation, or on the soil.

The egg, larva, and pupal stages of development take place in the water.

The adult mosquito will emerge from the water to complete its life cycle which is referred to as complete metamorphosis.
